Energética XXI has published an article about Beridititled “Beridi develops a project of concrete-based floating wind platforms in deep waters” (go to article).

“80% of wind power is found in deep waters, where the wind blows more steadily and at higher speeds. In these waters, the use of platforms fixed to the bottom is impracticable, so the use of the most recent technology of floating platforms is essential.

Beridi has patented a disruptive floating platform based on concrete (Triwind) that allows the installation of the largest wind turbines (>15 MW) safely and with savings of up to 50% in the costs of the platform with respect to other competing technologies.

Triwind is based on concrete which has substantial advantages in terms of cost, strength and durability, compared to the steel used by most players in the floating wind market. Concrete lasts longer in sea water than steel. In addition, thanks to Triwind’s unique design, its construction is compatible with the concrete caisson method, allowing a multi-thousand ton platform to be manufactured in just a few weeks, rather than several months as other floating platforms require.

Beridi’s Archime3 project has received 2.65 million euros of public funding (European and national grants) and a commitment of 4.8 million more from the European Investment Bank. The first 1.5 MW prototype is now being prepared in Gran Canaria.

To meet the goal of climate neutrality by 2050, the EU has committed to increasing offshore wind capacity from its current level of 19 GW to at least 60 GW in 2030 and 300 GW by 2050. EU aspires to become the first climate-friendly continent neutral before 2050 and wind power is expected to become the main source of power generation before 2030.

Emission reduction

In terms of emissions reduction, the installation of a typical sized wind farm of 400 MW could save up to 17 million tons of CO2 per year. The 15 MW turbine, whose size would be the equivalent of the Eiffel Tower, could supply over 35,000 families. The savings forecasts are €240 million in savings for a medium-sized wind farm and €160 billion in potential savings for the EU.

The potential of floating wind

By 2035, the floating wind market is expected to be valued at 96 billion dollars, corresponding to a new installed capacity of 27 GW. Floating platforms will represent a market opportunity of 22,000 million euros until 2035. The regions with the greatest potential are Europe, the United States and Japan.
