Earlier this year, we subjected our TRIWIND floating platform technology to a new series of rigorous tests at the IHCantabria wave tank – with outstanding results!
Our latest campaign focused on the behavior of our optimized hexagonal-shaped platform, designed for 22MW turbines and specifically tested under the challenging metocean conditions of the Gulf of Maine (USA). We subjected TRIWIND to some of the most demanding load cases, simulating scenarios analogous to the most stringent Design Load Cases set by industry standards.
After pushing the platform to its limits, the results are clear: Triwind met – and exceeded – our expectations in terms of stability, safety and energy production capacity, thanks to remarkably low heel angles and minimal accelerations, even under extreme conditions.

TRIWIND vs cat 5 hurricane
To demonstrate TRIWIND’s exceptional performance, we’re pleased to share a video showcasing one of the most demanding tests, featuring 9-meter significant waves over a 13-second period, and turbulent winds at 82 m/s (295 km/h!!), conditions akin to a Category 5 hurricane.
In an effort to fully unravel the reasons behind the platform’s remarkable behavior, the experts at IHCantabria embarked on a series of additional tests to capture the system’s non-linear damping characteristics. These were combined with parallel numerical modeling throughout the campaign, affirming what our team expected. The unique damping system, consisting of a meticulously designed arrangement of internal damping chambers, is perfectly synchronized with the platform. This synergy ensures the entire floating wind turbine system offers exceptional stability, reinforcing its reliability even under the most challenging conditions.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR TRIWIND?
The results of these wave tank tests reaffirm our confidence in TRIWIND’s potential to set new standards in floating foundations. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, and we’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the offshore wind sector.
In early 2025, we’ll be undertaking the construction phase of our ARCHIME3 project and showcasing how our proprietary design and fabrication methods accelerate the production process to reduce CAPEX, lower the LCOE and improve the sustainability of floating offshore wind power.
